At 33%, The Dead Sea has the highest salt concentration of any other body of water on Earth.  In comparison, Utah’s Great Salt Lake has 22% and the oceans have a salt content of 3%.  Located on the Syrian/African fault line, the Dead Sea is a geological phenomenon.  Three million years ago, a valley containing ancient layers of mineral-rich earth became exposed and salt water springs erupted, creating an enclosed lake 432 meters (1417 feet) below sea level.  Over thousands of years, evaporation increased the concentration of minerals and salts, forming what is known today as the Dead Sea.

Brought to the surface by 55 hot mineral springs, lying at a depth of 1500 meters, Dead Sea Salts are unique.  Minerals leaching from surrounding geological strata also contribute to Dead Sea brine and many of the thermo-mineral springs found along its shores.  As the historical site where Jesus was baptized, the Jordan River flows from the Sea of Galilee into the Dead Sea.  The devout consider The Dead Sea waters to be holy.
